Why We’re Moving Away from PayPal

PayPal's integration with Stripe has caused significant issues, especially for users migrated from Chargebee. This breakdown in functionality has led us to consider discontinuing PayPal support, as it’s no longer a reliable option for recurring billing. Centralizing payments may provide a more dependable solution.

Dear Member,

Dealing with PayPal has become a significant challenge, particularly when it comes to integrating it with other payment platforms like Stripe. Many businesses, including ours, have faced ongoing issues that have made PayPal less reliable as a payment method, especially after migrating from platforms like Chargebee to Stripe.

The problem lies in how PayPal interacts with Stripe. When a subscription is set up directly in Stripe with PayPal as the payment method, everything works smoothly. However, for users who initially subscribed through Chargebee and were later migrated to Stripe, the integration fails completely. This isn’t just a minor glitch; it’s a fundamental breakdown in functionality. Despite our best efforts, including manually voiding automatically generated invoices and issuing one-time invoices through PayPal, the issue persists.

After extensive troubleshooting and discussions with Stripe support, it was confirmed that PayPal simply doesn’t work for subscriptions that were migrated from Chargebee to Stripe. PayPal can only process one-time payments in these cases, which isn’t feasible for businesses that rely on recurring billing. This issue is rooted in the integration between PayPal and Stripe, and unfortunately, it’s something beyond our control.

Given PayPal’s massive presence in the market, one might expect a smoother transition. However, this situation has highlighted some of the shortcomings of PayPal as a merchant service. It’s clear that while PayPal may be a dominant player, its product isn’t always the best choice for businesses needing reliable, integrated solutions.

The frustration with PayPal has led us to seriously consider discontinuing support for it altogether. Moving away from PayPal may be the best way forward.

This decision isn’t taken lightly, but the ongoing issues and the strain they’ve placed on operations make it clear that relying on PayPal is no longer viable. We believe that by centralizing our payment systems and moving away from problematic platforms, we can offer a more consistent and hassle-free experience for everyone involved.

We will be contacting all PayPay members with some options.
